The MLAK key: easier access to toilets across Australia
Learn how the MLAK key can help children with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis access compatible locked public toilets across Australia. Find out how to apply, what it costs, where to use it, and how to make outings and family trips a little less stressful.

When your child has Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, knowing where the nearest toilet is can be a big part of everyday life. Bowel urgency can happen suddenly, and finding a public toilet that is open and accessible isn’t always easy.
The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) may help make outings, school excursions, family holidays and everyday activities a little less stressful.
🚻 What is an MLAK key?
The MLAK key is a special key that opens compatible locked accessible public toilets and other facilities around Australia. These facilities may be located in shopping areas, parks, railway stations, public buildings and other community spaces.
Some facilities, including Changing Places amenities, also use the MLAK system.
For children and young people living with IBD, having access to an MLAK key can provide another option when they need a toilet urgently. It can also give families greater confidence when travelling or visiting unfamiliar places.
Important: The key only works on facilities fitted with a compatible MLAK lock. Not every accessible toilet uses this system.
💙 Can children with IBD get an MLAK key?
Eligibility is intended for people with a disability and may require supporting evidence or written authority from a doctor or an appropriate organisation.
If your child has Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, it is worth checking the eligibility requirements. You may need to provide evidence of your child’s condition or a supporting letter.
Crohn’s & Colitis Australia can also provide information about obtaining a supporting letter for an MLAK application.
